Tim Nieman
University of Amsterdam

"My field of interest within earth sciences is geomorphology, the science that tries to describe the physical features of the earth surface. The master and preceding Bachelor programme of Physical Geography of the University of Amsterdam have increased my understanding of landscapes and processes that are fundamental to them. Studying at the department of biology (plant eco-physiology) of Laurentian University in Sudbury, through the PEMA project, enables me to better recognize and appreciate the role of vegetation in the environment surrounding us. The remarkable influence of man on the nature adjacent to Sudbury, by first destroying it with intensive mining and then revive it by conservation restoration programs, changed my perspective about the earth and how humans interact with it. Overall, this exchange satisfies my drive to explore the earth, new places and other cultures."

Joëlle Dufresne
Université de Moncton, Canada

"My name is Joëlle Dufresne and I am 22 years old. I am originally from Québec, Canada, a place of beautiful landscapes, where the majority of the population speaks French. My family loves to travel. I grew up in a great family of three children. When I was young, I visited a lot of countries and even lived three years in Paris.

After a diploma in social sciences, I decided to go to university in New Brunswick, in order to be able to explore another culture. I have just finished a bachelor degree in education, and, in September, am starting a master’s degree in business administration (MBA). I then plan to do a master’s in environmental studies, because I hope to work for my family’s company which deals with environmental issues, such as soil restoration. I have always enjoyed travelling, been interested in nature and respect our environment."

Joëlle's Report

David Dussault
Université de Moncton, Canada

"I am 25 years old and presently working towards a Master’s degree in environmental studies at the University of Moncton. I spent all of my preteens in Rwanda, Africa, where my father worked for the Canadian International Development Agency. My family then moved to Calgary, Alberta, where I attended high school, and to Sudbury, Ontario, where I went to college and university, attaining a diploma in math and science, and a BA in law and justice. I then attended university in Moncton, New Brunswick, to earn a MBA degree.
The studies I am now pursuing will provide me with a much broader base of theoretical and practical knowledge, which I can then use, along with the knowledge I acquired in my MBA and BA, to make a contribution towards mitigating the effects of global warming and reducing contributory factors.
Environmental issues of the Maritime Provinces, especially New Brunswick, and what remedial and preventive actions could be immediately implemented, would adhere to the recommendations of the Stern report, and would be an interesting place to start."
